Great news, I agree that we should “defragment” a little bit. If there would be some place where goals and heading of this initiative can be written so everybody can know what is going to happen I think a lot of us would appreciate that.

This is a great idea. It should incorporate updated versions of those articles from the old Wiki which are still relevant, and then the old content should be eradicated.

Screw the official documentation. Most of it is so out of date it’s useless anyway (with some notable exceptions).

Am I correct in assuming that the FAQ collection in the forums would also be a possible source of some content? I’ve written some HOWTOs in the Tips and Tricks forum which I would like to see included as well.

Please don’t fragment even more.
We (gentoo users) have a lot of corollarium sites that we have to know and check (alternatives to packages.gentoo.org, various wikis, and so on).
put a huge banner on articles that are not supported, but *please* collect informations from various wikis.
When a lot of users will use official wiki, articles will grow up on quality and quantity, and bad articles from unofficial sources will be dropped naturally.

Marvin: Anyone who wants to can contribute to the GDP. They even accept plaintext submissions, so you don’t need to learn GuideXML. And to be fair, gentoo-wiki.com learnt their lesson and now do offsite backups.

marens: I agree that znurt.org is excellent and should replace packages.gentoo.org.

I think that one lesson that can be learnt is that when community needs are not (or poorly) met by services under gentoo.org, individual initiatives will pop up, but this often leads to fragmentation. Our goal should be to bring these back under the gentoo.org umbrella, for the greater good of the whole community.

Thomas, Julien: we aren’t duplicating anything exactly. Our goals are a bit different. Moreover, enough people don’t think the unofficial wiki is doing so well. Having Gentoo infrastructure support is important to us. As is improving cooperation between developers and users.

disi: any subject that relates to Gentoo can be included, so that means overlays too.

winterheart: we will initially start with English, but we are already discussing the best way to do i18n. SUL will certainly be high on our wishlist.

Hanno: we will be using the CC-BY-SA license that is also used for existing Gentoo documentation.

I always thought znurt.org (rather the technology behind it) should be used to replace packages.gentoo.org[1]. That + an official wiki under the gentoo.org domain would be really nice.

Don’t forget about the unofficial “Gentoo Wiki Archives” , which were setup cause unofficial Gentoo Wiki’s content was lost.

So, lets see where we stand:

* We have the GDP, but no one wants to contribute at all, if one even can.
* We have an unofficial Gentoo Wiki, which loses it’s articles and doesn’t backup stuff.
* We have an unofficial Gentoo Wiki Archive, to copy the unofficial Gentoo Wiki.
* And now we want an official Wiki, don’t want to copy the contents of the unofficial wiki’s, nor the GDP documentation.

*Thinks about the numerous copies of the Gentoo package index, popping up all over the net, cause packages.gentoo.org sucks too.”.

What the heck are we doing!?

I for one welcome this wiki! The unofficial wiki is quite frankly poorly managed. The website is often down, not to mention the data loss when the server (not running a backup apparently?) crashed some time ago.

How about i18n? Will be there sub-sites for each major language? If yes, please do them with Single User Login (SUL).

That by the users, for the users should definately get implemented.

Some of the content in the current Wiki is not official Gentoo. Will you include not official Gentoo related content for software from overlays etc.?

The not official stuff could also be tagged the same way as official stuff?

Also tags for outdated pages, instead of just removing them. It at least could give you a head start…
